Finally Shinjiro Torii opened the first distillery in Yamazaki in 1923. For the construction he engaged Mastaka Taketsuru, who had extensive knowledge in chemistry and the production of whisky. The cooperation of the two men ended after a few years due to numerous differences. Taketsuru eventually founded his own company, Nippon Kaju KK, which has produced some of the most popular and high-quality whiskys to date, such as the Yoichi 20 years old or the Hibiki Blend 30 years old. But Shinjiro Toriis distillery remained on course for success.
