Karuizawa Rarities – The liquid legend of the “Ghost Distillery”

Karuizawa is far more than a distillery today – it's a liquid legend. Founded in 1955 on the site of a former vineyard at the foot of the active volcano Mount Asama , Karuizawa forged a path that differed significantly from the Japanese whisky production of the time. Instead of aiming for a light, approachable style, the distillery produced whiskies described as "big and gruff".

The secret behind the unique character of Karuizawa's rare whiskies lay in the uncompromising selection of raw materials: The distillery used almost exclusively the high-quality Golden Promise barley variety from Scotland and consistently matured its spirit in sherry casks . The cool climate and snowy winters in the mountainous region ensured a slow, profound maturation.

After the distillery was mothballed in 2000 and finally closed in 2011, its meteoric rise to become the world's most sought-after collector's brand began. With the buildings completely demolished in 2016, every surviving bottle is an irreplaceable collector's item. At Jwhisky, we present these rare treasures, which fetch record prices at auctions worldwide – such as the legendary Karuizawa 1960 , which made history as a 52-year-old bottling.

Discover exclusive series such as:

  • The Noh series: Unique single cask bottlings with labels depicting masks from the traditional Japanese Noh theater.
  • The Ghost series: Strictly limited bottlings that capture the “spirit” of lost distilleries.
  • Rouge Cask Experiments: Rare vintages from the 1990s, matured in former red wine casks.

Karuizawa whiskies are known for their earthy, almost sooty aroma, combined with concentrated dark fruits, resin, and the scent of old churches. An experience now reserved for only a few connoisseurs.
