JI whisky

Local sochu and sake distilleries began producing whiskeys in small quantities after World War II, often for just a few weeks or months a year. These are also only sold locally. The Japanese word “地” (JI) means local or surrounding area, so “地ウィスキー” (JI whiskey) means local whiskey.

The whiskeys' origins from Sake and Sochu distilleries are evident, which is what makes them so interesting. Many of these whiskeys are very well made and have already won international awards. Some well-known JI whiskey producers are:

  • - Wakatsuru (Sunshine Whisky)
  • - Toyo Shuzo
  • - Monde Shuzo
  • - Venture Whisky (with Ichiro's Malt and Chichibu)
